Marmot Basin is located in the heart of Canada’s largest Rocky
Mountain National Park - Jasper National Park.
Marmot skiing is known (though not well enough) for having great
snow, and the longest, fastest high-speed quad in the Canadian
Rockies climbing 2,000’ vertical from base to near the summit.
Marmot features a nice progression from green to blue to black and
double black
diamond runs. For extreme skiers, expansive
bowls are
accessible off the summit Knob Chair at 8.570’. Marmot has
similarities to Loveland and Arapahoe Basin with its above tree
lined bowls only Marmot is far more remote with only one long
winding mountain road approach. You are as likely to see wildlife as
other cars some early snowy ski mornings. Marmot Basin is
independently owned through a coop of local people, and their pride
shows in the friendly staff.
While skiing at Marmot, stay at the Jasper Park Lodge. This Fairmont
owned resort sprawls across 700-acres with the main Rocky Mountain
Lodge as centerpiece, and numerous rustic out cabins provide
additional lodging. You can see Marmot’s slopes
from the Great Hall
lobby bar over the outdoor heated pool. If you didn’t get enough
skiing on the 3,000’ vertical of Marmot, take to skating on Jasper’s
Lake Beauvert, or head to town to explore the friendly frontier town
of Jasper. Just beware of elk grazing by the roadside. No caribou
though, park experts theorize that the wolves are reducing the
caribou population.
